UEFA EURO 2024: What you need to know

UEFA EURO 2024 is now underway, running from June 14 until July 14. 24 teams are battling it out to be crowned champions of the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship. Georgia is the only team to be making its European Championship finals debut.

Germany is hosting this year’s EUROS. The competition was hosted in West Germany in 1988, but this is the first time the Germans have staged this prestigious tournament since reunification. In 2006, the FIFA World Cup was held in Germany.

England is in Group C, alongside Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia.

Important dates

The group stage will conclude on June 26, with the knockout stage beginning on June 29. The quarter-finals are taking place in Stuttgart and Hamburg on July 5 and 6, and the semi-finals in Munich and Dortmund on July 9 and 10. The final will take place on Sunday 14 July 2024 at the Olympia Stadion in Berlin.

Tournament venues

A total of ten venues across Germany are hosting the matches. Nine of the stadiums were used for the 2006 World Cup. The venues are in Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, and Stuttgart.

Who is the favourite to win EURO 2024?

A painful penalty shoot-out meant victory was snatched from England in 2021. But according to some projections, England might have the chance to lift the trophy this year. Otpa’s pre-tournament forecast puts Gareth Southgate’s side as the favourites to win. In second place is France, who knocked England out of the 2022 World Cup. France is followed by the hosts Germany, and then Spain, who looked lively in their first match against Croatia. In seventh place is Italy, who beat England in the 2021 final and are looking to maintain their title.

Who is the favourite to win the Golden Boot Award?

Bets are also being hedged on which player will win the prestigious Golden Boot award. The foot-shaped trophy went to Christiano Ronaldo last time around. The Portuguese footballing ace has netted the title a staggering five times. This is Ronaldo’s fifth EURO tournament, and he is hoping to lift the award for the sixth time. But England’s captain Harry Kane is a favourite to win the award, having blasted home 44 goals for Bayern Munich this season. Though hot on Kane and Ronaldo’s heels is the French forward sensation, Kylian Mbappe.

Sustainability commitments

Sustainability is the heart of the European Champions 2024. Facilities inside the major stadiums enable broadcaster partners to produce their programming remotely if required, thereby reducing travel and logistical-related emissions. Power generators, filters, and fuel designed to reduce emissions are also being used at the venues.

Importance of having adequate insurance

With the world’s eyes on Germany’s prestigious football stadiums, EUROS 2024 highlights the importance of sporting venues having the right insurance. It’s not just large glamorous venues like Berlin’s Olympia Stadion that need the appropriate insurance to keep staff, players, and supporters safe, as well as buildings and equipment. This serves as a reminder that grassroots football and amateur clubs require sufficient cover too.
