The rise of caravanning in the UK

Caravanning in the UK is a £6 billion industry success story. Britons remain Europe’s leading buyers of touring caravans, with the UK caravanning market being second only to the US.

Statistics by the National Caravan Council (NCC), the trade association for the UK’s leisure vehicle and park home industries, show there was a 7.1% increase in the sale and dispatch of new leisure vehicles and motorhomes registered in Britain in 2017 compared to the previous year.

With the purchasing of caravans and caravanning touring trips on the rise, we ask what exactly is contributing to the UK’s caravanning success story?

Brexit and the rise of the ‘staycation’

Since the nation voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, the pound has continued to fall in value. With the pound’s value depreciating by approximately 12% against the euro and 5% against the US dollar since May 2016, going on holiday abroad is proving significantly costlier for Britons.

Hence the rising popularity of UK ‘staycations’, with more and more people opting to visit a British destination for their holiday rather than travelling abroad.

With a growing number of tourists holidaying at home rather than abroad, Britain’s estimated 555,000 touring caravans, 365,000 caravan holiday homes and 225,000 motorhomes need to be appropriately catered for when touring around the beautifully diverse British Isles.

As the weather improves and we head towards the busier tourist seasons of spring and summer, those managing campsites need to have the appropriate insurance in place to ensure their park and its content are covered for any potential risks.

Nelson Policies at Lloyd’s’ Caravan Operators Insurance insures caravan parks, park home sites, campsites, glamping and yurt sites with the appropriate cover to ensure the growing wave of eager caravanners passing through their doors are adequately protected.
