A Q&A with Gavin Allen, Residential Underwriter

This month we caught up with Gavin Allen, Residential Underwriter at Nelson Policies at Lloyd’s, to find out more about his role, what he enjoys about the insurance industry, and what he likes doing in his spare time.

When did you join Nelson Policies at Lloyd’s?

I joined Nelson Policies at Lloyd’s as an underwriter in 2016 after initially starting my insurance career working for insurance brokerages in the local area.

How long have you been working in the insurance industry?

I started my insurance career in 2011 broking both commercial and residential business dealing with a range of product classes from Motor Trade to High Net Worth household policies.

I then decided to extend my knowledge further and move to the underwriting arena working for Nelson Policies, as I wanted to obtain a greater understanding of pricing and risk analysis.

To broaden my expertise further I also obtained the Insurance Diploma and hope to work towards my ACII in the near future.

What do you like most about working in underwriting?

I like the way at Nelsons we underwrite each risk individually. Therefore, it’s my job as an underwriter to fully understand the risk, assessing both the physical and moral hazards Non Standard Risks pose. To do this I carry out in depth reviews of the local area and the past history of an individual, therefore every day is different and each risk poses new challenges.

I also enjoy delivering a high level of service to our broker partners to ensure we meet our common goals and fulfil the needs of our client.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy playing football and spending time outdoors with my family.
